Rawalpindi flood situation: PM summons emergency meeting

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has summoned an emergency meeting following the worsening flood situation in Rawalpindi due to continuous heavy rain.

According to reports, alarm sirens were sounded near Nullah Lai after a sharp rise in the water level, prompting authorities to advise nearby residents to move to safer locations.

Rawalpindi and Islamabad have recorded 230 mm of rain since last night, causing urban flooding in low-lying areas of the twin cities. Roads have been submerged, and daily life is severely disrupted.

Sources say the Prime Minister has sought an immediate report from the Chief Commissioner Rawalpindi and WASA Managing Director.

The emergency meeting will review losses caused by the rain and assess safety measures currently in place, according to official sources.

PDMA IMPOSES RAIN EMERGENCY IN RAWALPINDI

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has imposed a rain emergency in Rawalpindi amid heavy downpours and rising flood threats.

According to DG PDMA, all relevant departments have been put on high alert, and a local holiday has been declared in Rawalpindi to ensure public safety.

Residents living along Nullah Lai have been urged to cooperate with local authorities. The administration has also warned that legal action will be taken against those found swimming or bathing in the stagnant floodwater near the nullah.

The situation remains tense as water levels continue to rise due to nonstop rainfall.
