Following the recent reduction in petrol prices, the Punjab Transport Department has constituted special teams to ensure a slight decrease in public transport fares.
Transport Secretary Bilal Akbar Khan directed all concerned officers to remain active in the field and ensure the immediate issuance of a revised fare list. Regional Transport Authorities (RTEs) across the province have been instructed to take prompt action and submit reports on the implementation of fare reductions.
Bilal Akbar Khan stressed that transport fares must be adjusted in line with the drop in petrol prices. He also warned that strict action would be taken against those found overcharging passengers.
Petrol price cut
The government reduced the price of petrol by Rs7.54 per litre late last night, while slightly increasing the rate of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.48 per litre for the first half of August 2025.
Petrol, widely used in motorcycles, rickshaws and private vehicles, directly affects the daily budgets of middle and lower-income families. On the other hand, HSD powers heavy transport, farm machinery and trains. Any increase in its price is seen as inflationary, often driving up the cost of food and essential items.
According to the Finance Division, the new price of petrol is Rs264.61 per litre, while HSD will now be sold for Rs285.83 per litre.
