Azam Khan is one of Pakistan’s most talked-about wicketkeeper-batters. He is a talented player, but his fitness has often been a big topic of discussion. The 27-year-old finally spoke candidly about why improving his physical condition has lagged behind his cricketing journey.
In an interview with PakPassion, Azam mentioned his busy schedule. He said that for the last four to five years, it has been difficult for him to focus on his fitness. “Right now, I am in Lahore. I am working on my fitness and game at the NCA,” he said. “My weight loss won’t happen in a few days or weeks—it needs time.”
Azam may not have been picked consistently for the national team. However, his play in T20 leagues worldwide has often reduced concerns about his fitness. He acknowledged that his unhealthy eating habits were partly to blame—but stressed that excuses no longer apply.
Having last donned the national colors during the 2024 T20 World Cup, Azam is determined to turn things around. “The plan is to play at the highest level, and for that, you have to train to be the best. Many players have played internationally, but then disappeared. If I want to sustain myself, I need to work twice as hard as I am now,” he asserted.
With Pakistan’s head coach Mike Hesson setting high performance standards, Azam knows it will be hard to return to the national team. Nevertheless, his new commitment shows that he wants to change his public image. If he succeeds, his strong batting could make him a valuable player for Pakistan’s changing cricket team.
