WEB DESK: Pakistan’s women’s ice hockey team made history with a resounding debut at the Amerigol Latin Cup in Florida, securing a commanding 16–2 victory over Chile in their first-ever international appearance.
The team, comprising players of Pakistani origin living abroad, delivered an exceptional performance in the Division II fixture. Twelve-year-old forward Zoya Qureshi emerged as the standout player, playing a pivotal role in the team’s triumph and drawing attention as one of the youngest competitors at the tournament. In a remarkable twist, the women’s side took to the ice wearing the jerseys of Pakistan’s men’s team after their own kits were delayed at Philadelphia customs. Despite this logistical hurdle, the players embraced the moment with pride, turning the setback into a symbol of resilience.
The initiative to form Pakistan’s first women’s ice hockey team came from Donnie Khan, NHL Director of Development, who identified players of Pakistani heritage through social media and sports networks. The squad includes 12 skaters and two goalkeepers, all determined to showcase their talent on the international stage.
The Amerigol Latin Cup, which this year features 1,450 male and female players from 17 countries, is among the fastest-growing ice hockey tournaments outside North America. Alongside the women’s success, Pakistan’s men’s team has also impressed, defeating Chile 12–2 and overpowering the Panthers Warriors 20–5 in their early matches. The victories mark a landmark moment for Pakistani ice hockey, a sport still in its infancy in the country. With their breakthrough debut, the women’s team has not only earned international recognition but also inspired hopes of expanding the sport’s footprint among Pakistan’s diaspora and beyond.
