BEESTON: Leeds United began their Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton at Elland Road, courtesy of a late penalty converted by Lukas Nmech.
The newly promoted team worked hard to break down Everton’s strong defence and earned important three points to start their Premier League season
Leeds struggle to find breakthrough
United Leeds controlled much of the match, pressing hard and keeping Everton sealed in their own half for long spells.
The hosts patiently created a number of chances but were repeatedly denied by Everton’s tough defenders. Despite a physical presence and sustained pressure, clear goal-scoring opportunities were hard to come by for Leeds in open play. This lead to a growing frustration as the game wore on.
Late drama seals the win
The match’s defining moment came late, when an Everton defender was penalised for handball inside the area following a defender shot.
After a VAR review, the referee awarded Leeds a penalty. Lukas Nmecha stepped up confidently to convert the spot-kick, sending Ellan Road into raptures and securing Leeds’ first Premier League victory since their promotion.
Everton lack “urgency” and “creativity”
Everton’s performance was marked by a lack of offensive urgency and limited chances created. Their new singing, Jack Grealish, was introduced as a substitute but struggled to influence the game significantly in his short cameo.
The visitors appeared content to sit deep for much of the contest, focusing on defense solidity rather than pressing forward.
Manager David Moyes will now face the challenge of reinvigorating a side that showed little attacking threat and needs reinforcements to compete in what promises to be a demanding season.
Looking ahead
For Leeds, the win offers a confidence boost as they look towards a tough upcoming schedule, beginning with a trip to Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Everton will need to revaluate their strategy and gameplay.
